Awash Mobile Wallet

Awash Mobile Wallet is a mobile banking services provided by Awash International Bank S.C. It is a very simple and convenient to use mobile banking system. Holder of any mobile device can use the service without internet connection but availability of a mobile network is required. It is cost free or the user is not charged by telecom operator for using the services.

How to Register for Awash Mobile Wallet and Operate Account Using Mobile Device

Any person can register for Awash Mobile Wallet at:

1. Awash Bank Branches

2. Awash Bank Agents

3. You can deposit to your wallet account at any Awash Bank branch or Agent

4. You can save up to a maximum of ETB 25,000.00 in your wallet account

5. You can withdraw cash from your mobile wallet up to a maximum of ETB 6,000.00 in a day or 24 hrs from Agents, ATM or even branch.

Logging into Awash Wallet

  • Once registration is completed, SMS will be sent to the customer from Awash Bank SMS gateway confirming registration and containing four digits initial PIN (Personal Identification Number).

Enter your four digit PIN in the field to continue:

The system forces you to change your initial PIN by new one, and then enter a new PIN that you can remember but similar number like 2222 are not allowed. You need to enter your new PIN twice to confirm.

After changing your PIN, you need to log in with the new PIN. Then the system allows you to the Mobile Wallet System,

How to Get Available Services

Operating your account using USSD is quite simple. The steps are listed below in brief.

  • To get services, always dial *901#.
  • Enter your PIN correctly
  • Select service by entering the number corresponding to the services in to the field.
  • You have to complete one service before you proceed to another service.
  • It is advisable to change your PIN at a certain time interval. If you forget your PIN, you need to apply to your branch; you can get a new PIN immediately.

Internet Banking

Online channel (internet banking) is browser based application provided to bank’s  customers to access banking information and make transactions. The application is optimized for   desktop, laptop and tablet platforms too, and both mouse and touch screen navigation.

Mobile channel: Smartphone application providing similar functionality to online channel but in form of installed native application. The application is optimized for Smartphone. But mobile channel has branch and ATM locations features whereby customers can be navigated to nearby ATM and branches.

How to Use Awash Internet Banking Services

  • To get Awash Internet Banking services, you need to have a bank account with Awash Bank. Apply for Awash Internet Banking at account holding branch.
  • After application is processed, you will receive an SMS from Awash Bank SMS gateway containing your onetime password (OTP). This initial password is valid only for 24 hrs. Therefore, you need to change your password before it expires by logging into awash online.
  • Open your browser and type "" to  get access awash online.
  • Enter your seven digit account ID, then click on "continue" to proceed.
  • Enter your initial password, the system prompts you to change your old password to new one
  • Enter new password containing 8 to 10 digits each composed of capital letter, numbers and      other symbols. Saving password is not advised. Keep your password safely and secretly.

Account Operations

Accounts overview -when you click on this menu you will get a widget of all of the bank accounts under the party ID used as a login ID. You cannot access other accounts opened in different party ID.  .

Transaction history- You can select any of the accounts populated by online banking and view transaction history.


Transfer between Own Accounts- you can transfer amount from one of your account to another   account linked to your Internet Banking.

Send Money- by using this menu, you can send money to any partner by following the steps below:

  • Select a partner or create a new one. When you select a partner, a row for template will be    displayed.
  • Select "add new" from the dropdown box, payment option will be displayed. The available payment options are the following:

Bank Transfer- This is to transfer to bank account

Transfer to Wallet-This is to transfer to wallet    account. 

Transfer Cash-This is to transfer to unregistered mobile number. The beneficiary can withdraw from Awash ATM or Agent.

Partner Overview- you can view list of partners here. 

Orders- you can perform the following activities.

Statuses- you can view status of executed transactions.

Device overview and management- This feature is used to track statuses of mobile device user for    internet banking (mob app).

Mobile Application (Mob App)

Mobile Application (mob app) performs the same function to browser based system but it is based on installed applications on your smart phone.

Deposit Services

Demand Deposit

Demand Deposit Account (current or checking account) is a non-interest bearing account opened or operated by literate customers only, whereby, the operation is normally made by a cheque, which is issued by the Bank to the account holder. However, withdrawals may also be made from current accounts by preparing appropriate debit tickets on the strength of written instructions of the account holder, for collection of bank service charges, repayments of loans etc…

The main features of current account is that there is neither restriction on the amount of funds to be withdrawn at a time nor advance notice is required as long as there are sufficient funds in the account to cover the payment.

Generally, the main users of current account are companies and organizations, who usually have large cash transactions.

 Saving Deposit

Savings account is an interest bearing deposit. Individuals, organizations and associations can maintain saving accounts as long as they are legal and meet the procedural requirements set by the Bank.

Saving account is opened with the minimum initial deposit of only Birr 50.00. Passbook is issued to record deposits, withdrawals and interest earned on the deposit.

Deposit and withdrawal of savings account shall be made upon presentation of the passbook issued to the account holder at the time of opening. If withdrawal is to be made from the branch other than where the account is kept, the customer will get the service without charges.

Fixed Time Deposit

Fixed time deposit is a deposit mobilized for a specific period of time. It attracts higher interest rate than the prevailing saving interest rate.

The minimum period of accepting fixed time deposit is six months. The interest rates applied vary depending on the amount and duration of the deposit, that is the bigger the amount deposited and the longer the time of maturity, the higher the interest rate applied.

If the customer withdraws the deposit before the mutually agreed maturity date, he/she shall forfeit the accrued interest payable to the depositor.

Non –Resident Accounts:-

● Non-Resident Birr & Foreign Currency deposits, Read More (Link) These types of accounts are opened for eligible non-residents of Ethiopia to facilitate payments by the international community, foreign business community, individuals, international organizations and their employees.

The major types of non-resident accounts opened by Awash International Bank are:

Non-Resident Foreign Currency a/c (NR-FCY a/c), Read More (Link) This type of account is kept in hard currency. Deposits can be made from transfer in hard currency, foreign cash notes, travelers’ checks and checks drawn on a non-resident account. Holders of this account could draw foreign currency to effect payment, to cover travel expenses  and make transfers abroad etc. 

Non-Resident transferable Birr a/c (NR-T Birr a/c), Read More (Link) this account has the same features and use as NR-FCY a/c except it is denominated in Birr (local currency) 

Non-Resident Non-Transferable Birr a/c (NR-NT Birr a/c), Read More (Link) This account is intended to facilitate payments locally in Birr; Foreign exchange permit is required to make transfers abroad from this account.

Non-Resident Accounts for Ethiopian Diaspora, Read More (Link)

Ethiopians who live abroad and foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin are eligible to open this account. The account can be opened in person or through authenticated communication from their places of residence.

● Special Deposit Read More (Link) Special demand deposit account is a non interest bearing account that is opened to fulfill the requests of those customers who do not want interest payment for their deposits.

3.Private limited Company

  • Renewed Trade License, Registration certificate & TIN in the name of the company.
  • Memorandum and Article of Association attested registered and sealed by Document Authentication and Registration office.
  • Letter of Request to open and operate the account signed by the authorized person stated in the memorandum and Article of Association and sealed by the company’s official stamp.
  • Valid and renewed ID cards of the authorized persons to operate the account.

4.Share Company

  • Renewed Trade License in the name of the Company.
  • Memorandum and Article of Association attested, registered and sealed by Document Authentication and Registration office.
  • Minutes of the Board of Directors to open and operate the account
  • Valid and renewed ID cards of the authorized person(s) to operate the account.

5.Foreign Business organizations

The attorney will submit the following documents after being authenticated by appropriate bodies in Ethiopia together with the application.

  • Notarized minutes, of resolution passed by the authorized organ of the business organization evidencing a decision to open a branch in Ethiopia and investment permit.
  • Certificate of incorporation of the business organization.
  • Authenticated power of attorney from the H.O of the foreign business organization abroad to ensure that he/she is a legal agent.
  • Letter of request to open and operate the account signed by the legal agent and sealed with an official stamp.
  • Valid Passport or residence permits of the authorized person(s) to operate the account.



6.Local Non-Government Organizations

Shall produce the following documents

  • Certificate of Registration from FDRE Ministry of Federal Affairs Charities & Societies Agency.
  • Letter of support from the above Agency to open and operate the account.
  • Memorandum and Article of Association attested and registered by Document Authentication and Registration Office.

7.Public Enterprises

  • “Negarit Gazetta” for its establishment.
  • Letter of appointment of the General Manager for its establishment.
  • Letter of request to open and operate the account by General Manager.
  • Valid ID card of the authorized persons.

8.Association & clubs

  • Certificate of registration from their respective organizing authority.
  • Rules and regulation of the association that bears official stamp of the organizing authorized .
  • Valid ID cards of the authorized persons to operate the account.

9.Trade Unions

  • Certificate of registration from ministry or Regional Bureau of Labor and Social affairs.
  • Approved and registered rules and regulation of the trade union.
  • Resolution of the general assembly appointing the executive committee.
  • Letter of request by the chairperson to open and operate the account.
  • Valid ID card of person(s) authorized to operate the account.

II.Saving Account




  • Valid & Renewed ID card
  • Two passport size photographs

2.Coorperatives,Association & Other organization

  • Present the required documents that legalize its identity from the concerned government authority.
  • Valid and renewed ID cards of person’s who operate the account.

3.Company Accounts

  • Authenticated Memorandum and Article of Association
  • Letter of request to open and operate the account in line with the memorandum and Article of association signed by the manager and sealed with the official stamp of the company.
  • Valid and renewed ID cards of the person(s) who operate the account.



4.Religiuos Organizations

(a)    The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church

  • Support letter from the Patriarch or General Manager of A.A diocese secretariat or the Regional Bishop if the Church is located outside A.A to open and operate the account.
  • Valid ID cards of the Person(s) who operate the account.

(b)   Islamic Religion

  • Support letter from Ethiopia Islamic Affairs Supreme Council to open and operate the account.
  • Valid ID cards of the persons who operate the account.

(c)    The Ethiopian Catholic Church

  • Support letter from the Secretary General of the Ethiopia Catholic Secretariat to open and operate the account.

(d)   The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus

  • Support letter from the president of EECMY.
  • Valid ID cards of the person(s) who operate the account.

(e)    Other Religious Organizations

  • Certificate of registration from the concerned government office.
  • Valid ID card of the authorized person(s) who operate the account.


Idir, Associations, Unions, Savings and Credit Associations and Clubs

  • Certificate of Registration.
  • Rules and regulation that bears official stamp of the  organizing body
  • Letter of request by the chairperson to open and operate the account.
  • Valid ID card of the authorized person(s) to operate the account.

III. Time Deposit

  • Valid ID card of the depositor if the deposit is in cash or third party cheque or
  • Letter of authorization to the bank to debit the existing account and transfer to Time Deposit.

IV. Non-Resident Transferable Birr account and Non-Resident foreign Currency Account

  • Support letter from the appropriate organizations certifying that the applicant is an official member of the organization with a passport or its equivalent.
  • Permit from the National Bank of Ethiopia to open the account.
  • Valid ID card or passport of person(s) authorized to operate the account.

V.Foreign Currency Account for Non-Resident Ethiopia and Non-Resident Ethiopian Origin

The following individuals and/or enterprises may open a foreign currency account.

a/Non-Resident Ethiopian

b/ Non-Resident foreign National of Ethiopian origin.

    Non-Resident Ethiopians/Foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin shall present the following documents to open NR Foreign Currency accounts.

  • Application forms properly filled and signed by the account holder.
  • Valid passport and /or identification card of foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin of the applicant.
  • For businesses, certificate of ownership entitlement for the organization and/or article and memorandum of association.
